Donny Hathaway Touched My Soul as a Child—Twisted Melodies Brought It All Back! I’ll probably be listening to nothing but Donny Hathaway for the next week or so after seeing Twisted Melodies at Northlight Theatre. Whew… this play got me in my feelings. It’s there until August 10th…go see it!! 🙌🏽
I grew up on Donny Hathaway’s genius. From “A Song For You” to “Giving Up,” those timeless duets with Roberta Flack, including one of my favorites, “The Closer I Get To You” to “Superwoman,” and come holiday time…Christmas is NOT Christmas without “This Christmas” blasting in the house!
Donny passed when I was just 9 years old. I was still a child, too young to really know what he was singing about. But this song right here…”I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know” was one of my favorites even back then. It stirred something in me. That’s the power of Donny Hathaway’s gift. His voice, his soul, his pain, his genius - it reached me even as a little girl.
I had NO IDEA that this genius was struggling in that way with mental health. Makes me love his gift even more. To carry all that pain, and still pour out music that healed people? Whew.
That’s the magic of music that comes from the soul. Go feel it for yourself at Twisted Melodies. You will not leave the same. 🎶🖤
