Imagine your parents or grandparents being told to sell their home and “just move to Waukegan or Rogers Park.”
Or, as one local media figure suggested, “just move to Flint, Michigan.”
That is the reality facing elders and longtime residents in Evanston right now.
And last Monday night, five councilmembers hadn’t even read the packet for the Evanston Property Tax Circuit Breaker Program, but were ready to stall it anyway.
They tried to bury this program.
We’re not letting that happen.
This video features Northwestern student Amaad Garrett, whose powerful research and testimony helped build this program from the ground up. His integrity stood in sharp contrast to the political games on the dais.
Thank you to every resident who spoke.
Thank you to Cook County staff for honest guidance.
And thank you to Clare Kelly, Parielle Davis, and Tom Suffredin for standing firm.
Next step: HCDC - Tuesday, Nov 18 at 6PM.
This meeting will decide the future of property tax relief for Evanston’s seniors and longtime residents.
Show up. Log in. Speak out.
Displacement is happening quietly in Evanston. We’re exposing it…and fighting back.
