Dominic speaks French and Mauritian Creole, also called Morisien or Morisyen, a French Creole language from Mauritius. Mauritian is spoken by as many as 1.4 million people, primarily in the island nation Mauritius, which is situated in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Madagascar. A French Creole language, Mauritian is related to languages Reunion Island Creole, Haitian Creole, and Lousiana Creole. The genealogical classification of "creole languages" has been challenged in recent decades because "creole" refers to "creolization", which describes the process of two languages converging to form a new one, rather than precisely describing where a specific language comes from. In the case of Mauritian, it may be more accurate to describe the language as descended from Latin, making it a Romance language alongside French.
