Dombey and Son (1969) is a BBC adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel of the same name, an admittedly dull and tedious book, but an undeniably strong, emotional and compelling television series about a man, riddled with pride, refusing to accept his daughter's love after the death of his only son.

With a sharp script by Hugh Leonard, sophisticated direction from Joan Craft and a cast that never put a foot wrong, Dombey and Son is easily one of the best adaptations the BBC made based on Dickens' work, quite possibly one of the best ever made. It might not share the same visual strength or gloriously darker tones with say Alan Bridges' Great Expectations (1967), but it stands out as a masterpiece on its own right, and shall bring a tear to the eye of any sensitive viewer.

All episodes have miraculously survived to stand the test of time. Interestingly, three of the thirteen episodes are held as their original videotape masters, and exist in a much higher quality than the ten 16mm telerecordings, but the episodes are all of exceptionally high quality considering their age, allowing the production to relish on a top quality DVD release in 2017, almost fifty years after it was first broadcast.
