The news of Dolly Parton's death is resonating across the globe, from music lovers to the people carrying on her literary legacy through the Imagination Library.
Parton's legacy is being remembered in many ways here in the Rochester region. For those who knew her work, her contributions to music and her life of giving will go down in the history books.
A small piece of the star-studded walls at the House of Guitars in Irondequoit includes a special piece of music history: a framed portrait autographed by Parton that her record label sent to the store in the early 1990s. The portrait is still proudly on display.
Since the news of her death broke Tuesday afternoon, her music could be heard playing on a loop inside the store, including "9 to 5," "Jolene" and other hits.
House of Guitars owner Armand Schaubroek remembers selling tickets at the store when Parton performed in Rochester in 1977.
"Beautiful person," he said. "I think she lights up the TV cameras, lights up the movie screens, the videos. She's just a happy person, and you can feel the kindness."
The news has also been heartbreaking for local country singer Josie Waverly, who was inspired by Parton's music.
"She gave and gave and gave, and giving is living," Waverly said. "And she found that out. She figured it out early, and that's what she did. So with her music, she gave a lot to everybody. So that's going to be her legacy, her giving."
Through the Imagination Library, Parton's literary outreach has provided books to millions of children across the country.
Lindsey Dailey, community program manager for Rochester Imagination Library, said nearly 4,700 books are given to local children each month, free of charge.
