In this video, I’m using one of my favorite simple wood finish systems: Danish oil with paste wax on top.
Danish oil is easy to apply, brings out the color and figure in wood, and is simple to refresh later. But by itself, it doesn’t build much protection on the surface. That’s where paste wax helps. It adds a thin surface layer that improves the feel, adds a soft sheen, and gives the finish a little more resistance to moisture, dirt, and grime.
I’ll show how Danish oil compares to a stronger film finish like polyurethane, why every finish is a tradeoff, how I apply Danish oil, how long I wait before adding wax, and how paste wax changes the way water behaves on the surface.
This isn’t the strongest wood finish, and it’s not meant to replace polyurethane when maximum protection is needed. But for a simple, good-looking, easy-to-maintain finish, Danish oil and paste wax are hard to beat.
