When you push a card scraper across wood, you’ll see one of two things come off the surface…either feathery curls…or dust. That’s the easy part. The frustrating part is figuring out why you’re not seeing curls…or why you’re seeing curls and then after a few passes…dust again.
And the reason for both of those problems is the same.
For curls to happen: you need a burr… the burr can’t be over-rolled…and you have to hold the scraper where the hook actually bites.
Card scraper burrs live on a spectrum. On one end, the burr is so shallow that it’s basically just a straight edge…there’s nothing for the wood fibers to catch on, so you get dust.
On the other end, you can roll it so far that it stops cutting with the tip. Think of it like a fish hook. If the point gets rolled too far, you’re not cutting with the tip anymore…you’re riding the bend behind it. And again, you get dust or even start burnishing the surface.
The sweet spot isn’t at the ends…it’s in the middle.
But even inside this band…there’s a range.
On the lighter side, you’ll get finer curls…maybe even a little dust here and there…but the burr will last longer.
If you’re on the aggressive side of that middle, you’ll get beautiful curls…but the burr is more fragile and it won’t last long.
Finally, one more wrench in the system…not all woods act the same.
Dense hardwoods like maple or cherry will throw beautiful curls.Softer woods or wild grain might give you finer shavings…or even a little dust…even when your burr is dialed in.
There isn’t a magic angle. There’s a range. Find that range…and scrapers start making sense.
