We're going LIVE tonight at 9:30PM EST and Emily and I ARE IN for A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas! 🔥 The creatives absolutely nailed this book for longtime ACOTAR fans AND anyone just now entering Prythian, and chapters 9 through 14 are where Nesta starts finding her people.
Here's what we're reacting to TONIGHT:
Chapter 9: Nesta visits Emerie's shop in Windhaven looking for warmer training leathers and learns that Emerie's wings were clipped by her own father. Back at the House of Wind, Nesta is shelving books in the library when an acolyte interrupts her mid-conversation with the House itself. She introduces herself as Gwyneth Berdara. Most people call her Gwyn. The friendship era begins.
Chapter 10: Nesta has a nightmare and tries the steps again, misses one, and goes crashing down. She grabs hold to stop herself and when she pulls her hand away, she has left her handprint embedded in the stone. Her powers showing up whether she wants them or not. At training the next day, Cassian begs her to join him, says please, and she still can't do it.
Chapter 11: Nesta and Cassian have their biggest blowup yet, right in front of Azriel. She refuses to train in Windhaven, he snaps and tells her everyone hates her, and he's done. Feyre shows up because Rhys says Cassian has been thinking very loudly. She tells him it has always been that way between her and Nesta: their mother only ever cared for Nesta, and there was always a divide. Cassian starts to get an idea.
Chapter 12: Cassian's idea: he brings Nesta to the flat top of the mountain at the House of Wind, away from all the Illyrian males watching and judging. To get her to agree, he offers a bargain. She agrees. If she trains for an hour, he owes her a favor. The bargain marks them both with an eight-pointed star tattooed on their backs. They spend two hours working only on her footing and breathing. At the end, he tells her he didn't mean what he said. She tells him she has never hated him.
Chapter 13: Gwyn finds Nesta in the library in a panic. She accidentally put Volume 8 of The Great War in Merrill's office instead of Volume 7, and Merrill is terrifying. Nesta asks the House to find the right book, it does, and she goes to Merrill's office to make the swap herself. She finds Gwyn singing, and notices something: her hair seems to glow and her skin radiates light when the music comes out of her. Merrill is currently writing a comprehensive history of the Valkyries, the legendary female warriors who died 500 years ago.
Chapter 14: Training continues, and Nesta opens up. She tells Cassian she took dancing lessons as a child, that her sisters were her father's princesses but she was her mother's creature, and that her mother was a worse version of herself. She asks Cassian what happened to the priestesses at Sangravah, where Gwyn came from. He tells her: Hybern sent their cruelest warriors, killed most of the priestesses, and brutalized the rest. Azriel was the one who got there and slaughtered the soldiers. Mor brought Gwyn to the library. Then Cassian and Rhys head to the Spring Court to meet Eris on neutral ground. Eris wants to kill the mortal queens now. Cassian says that's how wars start.
