Do you really need lead shielding for radioactive minerals?
Not always!
Many mineral samples are stored in clear acrylic containers because they protect the specimen and help prevent contamination… but acrylic has VERY little effect on gamma rays.
Lead, on the other hand, is much more effective at reducing gamma radiation. Whether it’s necessary depends on the source, its activity, and how it’s being used.
Understanding the type and intensity of the radiation is far more important than assuming every radioactive sample needs heavy shielding!
