Ever since I was a kid, I dreamt of visiting the regions of the world that were the farthest away from where I grew up. The region surrounding Lake Baikal was one of them.

If there is one place that even the most hardcore travellers dream of visiting,
that is Magadan.
The city with one of the darkest histories in the world is located in the deepest corner of the Far East of Russia, in a position that is so remote that even the most experienced adventurers have often had to give up mid-mission while en route to Magadan.
While nowadays there are more-or-less comfortable flights from Moscow to Magadan, I decided to take a two-week holiday in the middle of winter to do something special: I decided to travel to Magadan by land, crossing the entirety of Siberia.
However, traveling all the way from Moscow to Magadan by land would have taken far more than two weeks, so I decided to jump on a plane first and start my journey from Irkutsk, the legendary Siberian city closest to Lake Baykal.
When I was a kid, I remember reading a blog post about a random guy claiming that the ice of Lake Baykal was the most transparent in the world. I even remember seeing some pictures on that blog post, but I thought for sure they were photoshopped.
In my mission to traverse the 5 thousand kilometres between Irkutsk and Magadan only by train or bus, I set out a goal for the first day to visit Lake Baykal and finally find out whether
the folkloristic myths about the transparent ice of Baykal were true or not.
