Oymyakon is the coldest village in the world, and a place I had always wanted to visit for the longest time. But why Oymyakon? Why people would want to travel to the coldest place in the world?
Because it's just fascinating. Like in Oymyakon is so different from anything we're ever been used to.
The town of Oymyakon is located between two mountain ranges causing the wind to focus directly onto the town. As a result, Oymyakon sees the lowest average winter temperature in the world, outside of Antarctica. Since there is no permanent population in Antarctica, Oymyakon holds the record of being the coldest permanently inhabited settlement in the world. Hats off to Oymyakon!
The lowest temperature ever recorded in Oymyakon was -71.2 °C, which is commemorated with a monument on the main (and only) square at the centre of the town of Oymyakon. That is, however, an unofficial reading. On 6 February 1933, a temperature of −67.7 °C (−89.9 °F) was recorded at Oymyakon's weather station - this was the coldest officially recorded temperature in the Northern Hemisphere.
Only Antarctica has recorded lower official temperatures (the lowest being −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F), recorded at Vostok Station on 21 July 1983). The unofficial record cold temperature in Oymyakon is roughly 8°C warmer than the sublimation point of carbon dioxide.
