When PBS depicted a gay marriage in its recent episode of Arthur, Christians responded with their predictable level of outrage. Most of it was just your usual over-the-pulpit ranting, peppered with only the thinnest pretense of rational justification.
But one telling form of argument has arisen around this episode: And that is a call to tolerance for Christian fundamentalist belief. Instead of saying Arthur shouldn't have shown a gay marriage because Christianity should dominate everything, it suggests that the episode was trying to invade their homes and dominate them by indoctrinating their kids. So by fighting this episode, Christians are just standing up for themselves and defending their right to hold and teach private beliefs. In light of this complaint, I take a look at what actually happened in the show - and in doing so, I shed light on the question: "Do Christians want tolerance or dominance?"
