Cut 3 pieces of 3mm natural string, each piece is 6 ft long. Cut 2 pieces of 3mm violet ice string, each piece is 8 ft long. Fold the pieces in half and pin them to a cork board or tape them to the table in the order that you see here. The first row of knots is a bit tricky because the knots are not attached to each other but once we start row 2 it gets much easier.
Row 1 - Tie 5 reverse double half hitch knots using the left cord as your working cord. Leave a one inch space above each knot. Once finished this section is cut and brushed out to create fringe at the top of the bookmark. If you’d rather no fringe, do not leave a gap when tying your first row of knots. You can remove the gap by pushing the knots up the filler cords.
Feel free to move your pins like I’ve done here.
Row 2 - Skip the first cord and tie one reverse dhhk using the right cord as your working cord. Tie one reverse dhhk using the left cord as your working cord. Repeat those two knots.
Row 3 - Use the right cord as your working cord and tie one reverse dhhk. Use the left cord as your working cord and tie two reverse dhhks.
To make the back of this bookmark look as clean as possible you will want to change the direction you tie a couple of the knots. I will note this as we move through the tutorial. For the next knot use the right cord as your working cord instead of the left. The pattern looks the same from the front no matter which way you tie the knots but this way it will make the back look a bit cleaner.
Use the left cord as your working cord and tie a reverse dhhk.
Row 4 - Skip the first cord. Use the left cord as your working cord and tie two reverse dhhks. Use the right cord as your working cord and tie a reverse dhhk. As previously discussed, to make your work look a bit cleaner from the back use the right cord as your working cord instead of the left here for the last knot.
Row 5 - Use the left cord as your working cord and tie 3 reverse dhhks. Use the right cord as your working cord and tie 2 reverse dhhks.
Row 6 - Skip the first cord. Use the left cord as your working cord and tie 2 reverse dhhks. As previously discussed, to make your work look a bit cleaner from the back use the right cord as your working cord instead of the left here. Use the right cord as your working cord and tie a reverse dhhk.
Row 7 - Use the left cord as your working cord and tie 3 reverse dhhks. Use the right cord as your working cord and tie 2 reverse dhhks.
Row 8 - Skip the first cord. Use the left cord as your working cord and tie 2 reverse dhhks. Use the right cord as your filler cord and tie a reverse dhhk. As previously discussed, to make your work look a bit cleaner from the back use the right cord as your working cord instead of the left here.
Row 9 - Use the right cord as your working cord and tie a reverse dhhk. Use the left cord as your working cord and tie 2 reverse dhhks. As previously discussed, to make your work look a bit cleaner from the back use the right cord as your working cord instead of the left here. Use the left cord as your working cord and tie a reverse dhhk.
Row 10 - Skip the first cord. Use the right cord as your working cord and tie a reverse dhhk. Use the left cord as your working cord and tie a reverse dhhk. Repeat those two knots.
Repeat rows 1 - 10 to create two more hearts. Just a quick tip - you’ll know when to repeat this pattern because the cords will be in the same sequence as when you first started the piece.
Here is what it should look like once complete. Next we will trim the ends, cut the loops at the top and brush out the string to create some fringe. I went ahead and trimmed the top one more time as well.
