In this video I walk you through a Victron ESS installation I built at my parents' house. The system uses a Victron MultiPlus on a three-phase grid, a Raspberry Pi running Venus OS instead of a GX device, and an existing SMA three-phase string inverter that was already on the roof. I'll explain how everything fits together, how to program the MultiPlus using VE Configure and the ESS assistant, and how phase compensation works with the Victron energy meter.
The system runs in zero export mode, meaning the MultiPlus never pushes battery energy back to the grid. I'll show you why that's the right setup for most of Europe right now, and why the US is heading the same direction.
I start with a whiteboard overview so the garage tour makes sense, then walk you through the hardware, the software tools you need, and the VE Configure settings. I also cover the VRM portal for monitoring and remote configuration.
