Adding a deck railing is an important safety factor for your outdoor stairs. In this video, I show you step by step how to calculate how much railing you’ll need and how to install a railing around both the deck and along the outdoor stairs. This vinyl railing system is beautifully designed and durable to make your deck and stairs look great.
First, I will walk you through how to calculate the deck and stair railing length and purchase the correct amount of materials for the project.
Then, see how I prep these deck stairs for the railing, including adding some brackets and blocking for stability, and fixing some of the work that was previously done that was NOT up to Remodelaholic standard. I also add stair risers for extra safety and a clean finished look, which requires adjusting the placement of the stair treads, too.
Once the stairs are safe and sturdy, I show you how to install the simple deck railing system we chose, on both the deck landing and the stairs. In just a few steps, you can learn to install the deck post bases and vinyl sleeves, add the railing and vinyl balusters, and top it off with matching post caps.
