Experts have discovered the first direct evidence that a black Tudor mariner served on the Mary Rose.

This study offers “the first direct evidence to suggest a Black European mariner in Henry VIII’s navy”. Isotope analysis of dental enamel from eight crew members sunk aboard the warship the Mary Rose, suggests up to three individuals may have originated from warmer regions, such as southern Europe or possibly North Africa. One individual demonstrated cranial morphology suggestive of African ancestry, while isotope data suggested a childhood in coastal western England. The findings point to the “important contributions that individuals of diverse backgrounds and origins made to the English navy”, the authors add.
