Developed by Infogrames and published by Walt Disney Computer Software in 1992, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast: Be Our Guest is a collection of five mini-games based on Disney’s animated film. Its short length and simple child-focused design limit its appeal for older players, but colourful VGA artwork, familiar characters and a surprisingly varied selection of activities make it a charming early example of Disney edutainment. Rating: 6.5/10.

The game takes place inside the Beast’s castle as the enchanted servants prepare for Belle and the Beast’s special evening. Instead of retelling the entire film through a conventional adventure, it uses an interactive stained-glass menu that lets players visit different rooms and help characters such as Lumière, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Madame Armoire and the Feather Duster complete their assigned tasks.

Each room contains a different style of activity. In the dining room, Lumière moves around a large multi-level cake collecting cherries while avoiding animated tableware. The library features a memory challenge in which Cogsworth reveals musical symbols that must be repeated in the correct sequence. In the garden, the player brushes snow away from flowerbeds and matches pairs of flowers to create a bouquet.

The laundry room offers a faster sorting puzzle. Coloured pieces of fabric move along clotheslines and must be rearranged into the combinations requested by Madame Armoire. The colours must be provided in the exact order displayed, and incorrect groups are rejected. It is easy to misunderstand the target symbols at first, but once the rules are clear, the activity becomes a satisfying test of observation and speed. On the harder setting, the line fills quickly and careful planning becomes important.

The kitchen is the most elaborate part of the game. Mrs. Potts needs help guiding animated eggs safely into a mixing bowl by manipulating platforms, switches, chutes and other mechanisms. It resembles a simplified Lemmings or Rube Goldberg puzzle, requiring the player to study the layout and create a safe route before too many eggs are lost. This activity has considerably more depth than the matching and memory games and may require several attempts, particularly on the higher difficulty.

There are two difficulty settings, making the game suitable for young children while still offering a modest challenge for more experienced players. Controls are straightforward and primarily mouse-driven, with objects clicked, dragged or swapped depending on the activity. Failure is never severely punished, and every challenge can be retried without losing progress, which keeps the experience relaxed and approachable.

The presentation is the game’s greatest strength. The 256-colour VGA graphics capture the film’s appearance surprisingly well, with expressive character portraits, detailed castle interiors and an attractive stained-glass interface. Animation is limited, but the characters react with enough personality to make the activities feel connected to the movie. Completing all five tasks rewards the player with a short ballroom sequence featuring Belle and the Beast.

The audio includes recognizable arrangements of music from the film, helping create an authentic Disney atmosphere. Different releases appear to vary in their use of spoken dialogue, with later editions including compressed character voices. The sound quality is primitive by modern standards, but the familiar melodies and vocal clips add considerable nostalgic charm.

Be Our Guest can be completed in roughly 30 to 45 minutes, and there is little additional content once every activity has been mastered. Even so, it succeeds at its intended purpose: providing a gentle, colourful and varied collection for young Beauty and the Beast fans. It is too limited to be considered a substantial adventure, but as an early activity-center-style PC game, it remains pleasant, polished and historically interesting.
