The Atlantic has spent much of the 2026 hurricane season with the volume turned down.

Through Aug. 18, just three named storms have formed — Arthur, Bertha and Cristobal. All three remained tropical storms, leaving the basin without a hurricane nearly three months into the season.

That quiet start is not particularly surprising. Our meteorologist Dan Amarante explains why.
