There are noticeable temperature differences from one street to the next in Bridgeport's East Side neighborhood. Some blocks have little to no tree cover, are almost entirely paved with concrete and asphalt, and offer little relief from the summer heat.
Research over the years has shown that heavily industrialized urban areas with limited green space often experience the worst of the summer heat and are more vulnerable to other climate issues, such as poor air quality and pollution.
Some Connecticut communities are using trees, gardens and cooling centers to combat rising extreme heat.
