Selling a diode laser is a marketeer's dream. No cooling water, no beam alignment, no need to understand lenses, just buy it, build it and use it. It's as simple to use as a pencil. Hmm.... without creative and artistic skills, what can you do with a pencil? That's where the marketing challenge kicks in. With lots of professionally produced "items you can make" and copious techno lies and truth stetching, a naive entrant to laser technology can easily be parted from his cash.
I am not one of those "dream chasers". I bought this 40 watt head knowing that the specification and marketing BS was but a shadow of the true capabilities of the unit. I feel confident that despite it's failure to meet specifications in many key areas, I will be able to decode it's performance to extract maximum potential. Decoding means looking at all performance aspects in great detail and that is the aim of all following sessions
