These characters are part of Mandatory, but don't get the limelight as much as Video, Radio, and Pictures. Audio and Signal are actually Video (one of the main characters') parents and Phantascope is the main of the planned prequel, Of Events Prior.
Book two, Straight to Video, and book three, Stars of the Silver Screen, dive into these three's dynamic a bit but I don't do too much content on them XD I was listening to Dinner's Not Over by Jack Stauber though and got super inspired. I've already started coloring and you can find some of the colored frames in their Toyhouses (links above) already BUT ALAS.
Signal and Audio are very fun characters to write with, but Video and the rest of the cast pretty quickly catch onto the tension between the two when Phantascope, otherwise known as the Shadow Advisor, is brought up. Magic is illegal in the land of Media, but Audio befriends Phantascope immediately once he appears in their lives again, claiming he was a mentor to Audio during her childhood. Signal does not approve of the closeness or the risk of having a mage in their surroundings, so upon the first warning released by the government about the danger Phantascope potentially could be, Signal lights the mage's home on fire and attempts to execute him when he tries to retaliate. This strains Signal's relationship with Audio, who finds all the violence and doubt unnecessary. Phantascope found all of this amusing until his supposed death and destruction of his forest. Able to hear any thoughts directed or about him with a spell, he was entertained by hearing Signal's insecurities in his head and fed into it for giggles. (Boy, did that backfire.)
