This short film chronicles Dillard University’s role in the historic repatriation and burial of nineteen individuals whose remains were taken from New Orleans and sent to Leipzig, Germany over 150 years ago for racial pseudoscience. In partnership with the City of New Orleans, University Medical Center, and community leaders, Dillard honored these individuals through a sacred jazz funeral and memorial service, returning them to their home soil with dignity and reverence.
The documentary bears witness to a painful chapter of history while celebrating the resilience of New Orleans culture and the power of collective healing. It is both an act of remembrance and a restoration of humanity.
