A beautiful group of Zebras arrived at the waterhole today to cool down, rehydrate, and enjoy a peaceful drink under the Namibian sun.

Zebras are perfectly adapted to survive some of the harshest and driest landscapes in Namibia. They are commonly found in rugged mountainous terrain near the Namib Desert and western parts of Etosha National Park. Their specially adapted hooves grow extremely fast to compensate for the heavy wear caused by rocky ground, helping them move safely across steep mountain terrain.

Unlike many other animals, zebras are highly social and live in close family groups led by a dominant stallion with several mares and foals. Different family groups will often come together to form much larger herds, sometimes numbering hundreds of zebras.

Did you know every zebra has a completely unique stripe pattern? Just like a fingerprint, no two are the same. Shortly after birth, the mare carefully positions herself between the foal and the herd so the young zebra can memorize her stripe pattern for future recognition and safety.

Zebras are grazers and feed mainly on grass, but they will also eat leaves, bark, roots, and stems when conditions become dry. In harsh environments where water is scarce, they are even able to dig for underground water using a scraping motion with their front hooves. This behavior also benefits smaller mammals and birds that later use these small water holes to survive.

These zebras are most active during the cooler hours of the day and often seek shade during intense midday heat. Scientists have even observed them positioning their bodies in relation to the sun to help regulate body temperature in Namibia’s extreme climate.

Today’s visit to the waterhole was calm, peaceful, and a beautiful reminder of how well adapted these incredible animals are to life in the African wilderness.
