The 2026 FIFA World Cup has brought football fans from around the world to America, and one American habit keeps confusing European visitors: tipping. From tipping culture and hidden taxes to customer service, restaurants, card machines and everyday life in the USA, World Cup fans are discovering one of America’s most confusing cultural rules.
As an Irish girl who has travelled across America, I’m looking at why tipping in America feels so strange to Europeans, why Americans defend it, why visitors are shocked by it, and whether Europe is actually any better. The World Cup has become a giant culture shock experiment, and American tipping culture might be the habit that confuses people the most.
In this video, I talk about World Cup fans in America, European reactions to tipping culture, American service expectations, hidden costs, USA travel, and the strange cultural differences that only become obvious when millions of visitors arrive at once.
