We didn’t notice my deafness. Someone else did. My at-the-time friend’s mother noticed it being a possibility when I was at their house and I wasn’t answering to my name being called behind me. I was 11 then. So that’s 11 years unaccounted for. Maybe I had “perfect” hearing for a while. Maybe I always had some hearing loss until someone brought it up. We’ll never know.
