The story that inspired the song
Percy and I had been riding our bikes all morning and finally stop to picked up coolie cup from Mrs Linda house, one of many candy ladies. These cold icey hood delights would hit the spot after riding in the hot sun shirtless and free…Miss Linda had the best ones because hers was sweet and sour …She would add a lemon pack to every flavor.…Some time she would give us a spoon for scraping the icey but some time she was out of those and we all would eat it our own special way. Percy would lick and keep flipping the hunk of icey in the styrofoam cup until its got smaller and smaller. I would peel the white styrofoam back layer by layer and just suck all the sweetness out and keep peeling till it was no icey left only the bottom ridge of the cup in my hand. This day, Miss Linda was making her a fried bologna sandwich as we walked in. Its smelled so good She ask us if we want one and we eagerly said yes. We bought two quarter bag of chips. A bag of fruity tootsie rolls to split, and two blue iceys. We thanked Mrs Linda and sat on her porch and scarfed those sandwiches and chips down, pocketed the penny candy for later. Once we were done, sticky fingered and blue-tongued from the icey , we started lazily pushing our bikes towards the next unknown destination. We passed by a field of wild flowers. This beautifully unkept plot of land was full of wild geraniums, heart leaf aster, black-eyed Susans, and white & yellow dandelions. We walked passed this field every day to go to school but it never looked like this. Maybe because all the plants were punch drunk off the good rain that fell a few days before or that the sun was high noon high-beaming down reflecting the colors just right or even the cool breeze that rushed through ever few seconds animating all the stalks, stems and petals into a rustling choir sway to the rhythm of a dancing spirit. We had hours before the street lights came on....He stopped and let his bike fall to the ground, runs and plops down in the middle of the acre wide sea of floral rockers. I take my foot and push my kickstand down so my bike wont fall and get all scuffed up like his...It was a red Huffy Sigma with white disc wheels seeing it’s first spring rides since I got it for Christmas. "Come on!" he screams "Hold your horses” as Im steady the bike then run to him. I lay on my back like him...and sink into the soft grass …head to head.. my feet pointing north and his pointing south....the sky was cornflower blue and the sun was annoyingly bright. There was tons of towering fluffy clouds to block the rays.... the kind of clouds I would later love to see when I fly.......We are in a fortress of foliage….I closed my eyes …”I wonder when the last time somebody cut this grass…They could pay us to do it”…Through the warmth of the sun, I hear a giant bumble bee buzzing and butterflies fluttering about… to and from…I roll my eyes behind my lids toward the sound of the bee and thought “you bet not come over here bothering us.....this has to be like a Ryan’s buffet for them with all these flowers”….”Here...make a wish" the closeness of his voice startled me…. I open my eyes. We were no longer head to head. We were face to face. He was sitting Indian style leaning over staring into my eyes. He had uprooted a fuzzy dandelion. He softy rubs the pappus from my chin to my brow tracing my jawline. Red breasted robins peaking over at us being nosey like old neighbors spying on what we were doing as they forage for worms. “Wow …You have so many colors in your eyes when the sun hits them …brown green gray…that so cool…you got girl eyes” I rise up out of the discomfort of being perused and face him Indian style breaking the intimacy “No You got girls eyes …look at how long your lashes are?” “Do you like them?” He quickly ask as if that was the unknown destination we waited all day to discovery still tryin to hand me his flower…I respond soft and fast ”Yea they look nice” …..“I like yours too” I grab my own fuzzy flower from the fortuitous field and ask “What you gonna wish for?” to change the subject “I can't tell you or it won't come true” he says with a little smirk. “Close your eyes and let’s make a wish and blow them at the same time on the count of 3 ok?.” I agree and close my eyes. He begins to count 1……I wish I had long lashes too …no that dumb ….2……I can’t think of any good wishes so fast ….ugh…I shape my lips to begin to blow and on the measure where 3 was suppose to be, he kisses me in the mouth….It tickles….the bees buzzed harder … butterflies flutters away…. Nosey robins chirped in judgement
