![Make a Clean Looking Mustang Charging & Starting System
Every wiring job teaches you something — and on Kylies 1967 Mustang, it taught me a few things the hard way. In this episode we tackle the charging and battery cable system for a CVF serpentine setup running a 100-amp alternator and a front-mounted Group 24F battery, and I walk through the mistakes I made so you dont have to repeat them.
We get into lug sizing — why 5/16 and 3/8 matter and where each one belongs — adding a fusible link close to the battery with a 125-amp Maxi fuse, why a proper block-to-firewall ground is non-negotiable on a Ford, and how to crimp clean, marine-grade welding-wire cables that wont corrode down the road. At the end, I lay out every cable length and lug size we used so you can build the same system in your own 67–68 Mustang or Cougar.
Final cable notes include:
Positive battery cable to starter solenoid: 24 inches
Starter solenoid to Maxi fuse: 12 inches
Maxi fuse to alternator: 7 feet 3 inches
Negative battery cable to engine block: 36 inches
Starter solenoid to starter: 30-32 inches
Cables and welding wire from the folks at Fast and Quiet. Serpentine system and 100-amp alternator by CVF.
