In March 2020, the COVID-19 RECOVERY trial set out to find existing drugs that would work on this new disease. The results saved millions of lives - here's the story of just one of them.

The trial team announced that dexamethasone had been shown to save lives at lunchtime on June 16 2020. By the end of that day it was NHS protocol to give the drug to patients with Covid-19. Data suggests that more than a million lives were saved in the first six months of treatment.
