In this episode, Zonke & Gwyneth talk about emotional development and healing in South Africa, specifically the woundedness of young people and communities in Africa, the work she does with teachers and students, and the reasons for founding the African Consciousness Centre. How can we help to create well-rounded, emotionally grounded young people who are proud to be African?

The Story Anew is a podcast and video series in which we'll meet amazing people from all over the world who are working to redefine the dominant narrative of our times - that of infinite growth and consumption. These are the people working towards what Joanna Macy calls The Great Turning - the shifting of our Industrial Growth Society, which prioritises infinite growth over life - to a Life Sustaining Society.

The people you'll meet are working in regeneration, activism, systems design, permaculture, trauma healing, decolonisation, climate change and generally working to fundamentally change the way we do things as a species so that we can live on this planet more harmoniously with our fellow beings and become good ancestors.

Ntombizonke Mpotulo Ngidi is an education and community activist born in Cape Town in the township of kwa Langa to a Xhosa speaking family . She has a degree in Education and is furthering her studies in Education Management at the University of South Africa. Zonke attributes growing up amidst the pressures and challenges placed on women in disadvantaged communities to becoming a model for leadership and an agent of change for young people.

Her professional career is driven by her passion for education and social change which led to her becoming a teacher that activates leadership in other young people. She moved to Pretoria in 2012 to open the 6th LEAP school campus and in 2016 she ran a teacher training programme for the Global Teachers Institute. She then continued to follow her passion as Director of Education and Community Programs for ACFE . Zonke now leads the African Consciousness Learning Center. The center operates as an After School Program aimed at exposing young people from rural and disadvantaged communities to a range of skills such as Self Awareness and Emotional development. It also equips them with strong academic skills like Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Entrepreneurship as well as Art and media skills.

Zonke believes she has been very fortunate to be exposed in a lot of opportunities and has tried to use those opportunities to open doors for other young people. In 2011 she was selected to be part of the Young African Women Leaders Forum ( YALI) led by Michelle Obama and she came back and formed Young Township Leaders which was a platform that brought young people from township communities together to share about the work they are doing and find ways of supporting one another and share skills. As a result of her work she was selected as one of the Mail and Guardian Top 200 South Africans in 2016.

Her current work focusses on Emotional Development in the education sector. She runs teacher training sessions allowing teachers to be aware of their own woundedness so they can heal and be able to love the children they teach. Zonke also works with youth under the same emotional development umbrella. This is a dire need especially in this country where violence is rife in and outside the school gates.

She believes in creating platforms where young people can come together and engage in difficult conversations using peer voices in order to shift behaviour. Zonke believes that if this is done properly, not only will this country produce highly skilled individuals but also those with high emotional intelligence and can therefore commit to being positive agents of change for their communities.
