Depending on what day of the week you ask me, Deus Ex is my favorite game. I haven't kept strict track, but I'm fairly certain it's the game I've beaten the most times over the years. I'm not typically someone who replays games over and over — but Deus Ex is different.
Deus Ex is a game where the sum is greater than its parts. The combat is clunky. The stealth is fine, but there's plenty better out there. There's jank all over the place. And yet it all comes together into something that makes it exactly what it is. Deus Ex offers so much choice in how you want to tackle the objectives given to you, and the amount of love and care put into it is staggering. Every time you replay it, you're going to find something new. It's a conspiracy-driven thriller, and over twenty years later, it's amazing how many predictions this game made that have since come true in our world. It's one of those right games made at the right time — before the industry moved away from risk-taking, but at a moment when the technology became feasible to realize the vision. It's the game its creator Warren Spector wanted to make. It was his dream game, and it came out the way he wanted it to be.
I was going to make this video a couple of months ago when I did this playthrough, but I held off — there were other notable Deus Ex videos releasing around the same time, and more importantly, a significant mod was released shortly after, and events in the real world continued to demonstrate that this game keeps getting the future right. So now it's time for the Boulder Punch perspective on Deus Ex....
