A bit different from what I usually do around here, actually I think this is a first here on the channel. A nice and soft acoustic-only cover (well, okay there is a very very quiet and subtle piano playing under the guitars).
I think this is a nice and pleasant send-off the 2021 Subscriber Appreciation Event. Speaking of which, thanks and shoutout to Hank Smashes for requesting this one!
This is such a beautiful theme, and I always have a weak spot for pretty tunes. The problem I wound up running into with this one was that I wasn't sure how to approach it. I didn't want to just map things out by ear and try imitating the beauty of the original by using samples and sample libraries. After all, the original was already wonderfully done with a real live orchestra, it'd just be silly (and lazy) to try and copy that with samples.
So, instead, I thought about doing a piano cover, but then I realized that a couple of folks have already done piano covers of this song, so I figured "well, what about a nice clean guitar rendition?". So I hooked up my Strat and started playing the chords and melodies you hear in the cover. However, after recording on the Strat, it just... didn't sound right. I wanted something more "raw" and "traditional" sounding. Felt like that kind of quality would suit the cover better, compared to the sound of a clean electric.
So, after scrapping the Strat tracks, I went and got my chair and mic-stand set up to record the acoustic. After getting it all recorded, it was exactly the kind of tone and feel that I was hoping for!
However, I remained stuck for a while, since honestly, I'm not used to being so "minimal" in my covers (or any of my works for that matter). I felt like maybe I needed to add something, like light percussion, or pianos, or string sections. I also worried that the cover was too short, since I pretty much just straight-up played the original. I did however change up the rhythm section for the rhythm guitar. I wound up arpeggiating the chords, and also sort of coming up with my own chords in some parts too. I just paid attention to the root notes that the rhythm section had, and just kinda played things that sounded pretty with the main melody.
The piano did wind up making its way in, but very very quietly, since I wanted the acoustics to be the main focus here. Eventually after listening to it a bunch of times (actually falling asleep while listening to it on loop), I felt like maybe this sounded nice just as it is. Short, sweet, and simple. A very straightforward acoustic cover of a nice song.
Also, as for the video, hope you all don't mind the still image/thumbnail. I really wasn't feeling in the mood to go don my suit and tie for this (weather's warming up too). Especially since I should've had this out like a week or so ago, had I not gotten stuck.

I was actually quite surprised to find out that this was originally a dubstep song by Knife Party. Huge props to Jimmy for his Doomy interpretation of it m/! Very spooky and ominous.
I decided to cover this one pretty straight, without any additions or deviations. The only thing I really changed up was to chop off a bit in order to make things more seamless for looping.
I originally thought about recording my guitar for the square-synth melody, but decided against doing that since it just didnt fit the vibe. Rather than going with a square-synth, I put together this spooky synth layer stack. Almost has this like sinister music box sound to it.
Also, I think this is the first time in years since Ive used a marimba (last time I think was for my song Breach Code off of RED Planet II). It was fun layering together the various synths and samples for this one.
Anyways, Ill keep this description brief. Hope you all enjoy the cover! ~DAR

So this isnt quite a full return yet to the D64D2 Marathon. This was actually a request by ZX Spectrum V7.1 for the 2021 Subscriber Appreciation Event! ZX had also made a special request that this be covered a semitone/half-step lower than the original.
Ive got to say, its really great to finally be able to cover one of CoTeCiOs excellent jams again m/! Working on this has also been a great refresher for my upcoming return to the D64D2 Marathon. Also, I must thank ZX for his suggestion, as playing this in Drop C (as opposed to Drop C#) sounded quite nice.
As always, I tried to stay faithful to the original song. I wound up adding some strings and a choir in the background to fill a bit of space underneath the guitars. I was going to try and make the strings more prominent but decided against it, as I thought what I ended up with here in the cover sounded fine. Plus, I didnt want to take away from these awesome riffs! Also, I added a few drums to the intro bit, since it just felt right to me.
I did add some of my own lead parts for the middle of the song (2:18). The original had a repeat of the rhythm/riffs from the first third of the song, and as I listened to it, I felt like it was begging to be noodled on!
After noodling, we lead into the final stretch of the song. And what better way to lead into the final stretch than to have a fading, reverbed scream (3:52). I swear, my DAR Scream sample still gets so much use to this day, its surprises me honestly (recorded the original sample/clip back in early 2017!).
I had a lot of fun playing the solo there in this final part of the song. I will say though, that the really fast bits may not be note-for-note accurate, but I think it still sounds fun and cool!
Anyhow, to wrap up, something else that I did here was continue my experiments in bass guitar tone/mixing. I used what I learned from my Maximum Carnage cover, but this time I set up another mixer track to process my bass signal. This new track has the amp sim that I normally use for bass, but I tweaked the settings and also got rid of the cab-sim. From there I wound up blending in this new mixer-track. Its rather subtle when you listen to the whole mix, but by doing this, I found that I was able to help the bass stand alongside the guitars somewhat, rather than live completely under them.
Anyways, hope you all enjoyed this little teaser of more things to come for the D64D2 Marathon! I still have one more cover to tackle for 2021s Subscriber Appreciation Event, so I hope you all look forward to that too! ~DAR

So, this ones an old one for me, but new for all of you. Shoutout and thanks goes out to DeXiaZ for asking if I could do a metal remix of this track back then!
Ive actually been sitting on this one for about 3 years now, since it was the Summer of 2019 when I had originally recorded this (the audio, that is). This was going to be used for the release trailer of the [GEC] Master Edition PSX Doom project over on Doomworld (https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/101161-gec-master-edition-psx-doom-for-the-playstation-1102019-beta-3-release-now-are-you-ready-for-more-action/), so I had talked with DeXiaZ and agreed to wait on releasing this until that project finally finished.
Well, things seemed to sort of go on hiatus. After 3 years since laying down the tracks for this, I figured its been long enough. I especially wanted to include this one in my brief little foray into the PSX Doom tracks, since Ive always loved how this cover turned out.
With it being a few years later, Ive gone back and fiddled with my mixing a little bit, and also gave this a remaster. My old mix sounded quieter and almost kind of congested compared to the track we have here now.
I also tweaked the snare a little bit, slightly lowering the velocities in the beginning, as well as bringing back in more of the low-mids that I had originally lowered. With that done, the snare was a bit fatter-sounding. I threw on another reverb on an aux/send channel for the snare as well. I brought the volume-fader up for it when the guitars kicked in. Added a little more oomph to the snare, in my opinion.
Revisiting this track inspired me to start fiddling around with my bass signal-chain again too. The bass really got along well with the rhythm guitars here. Speaking of which, I dont know what I did back then, but I really loved the tone I got on the rhythm guitars. I still use the same exact settings, so the only thing I can think of is maybe my strings were newer back then. If I remember correctly, I think Ive been using the same set since then, or maybe it was 2018... yes, yes, I know I should change my strings more often!
I routed both string-section layers over to a reverb send track, and blended in a subtle amount of reverb. I also dropped in my usual plugins for the signal-chain for the Drum Bus. Felt rather interesting, as it was like combining bits of pieces of how I did things 3 years ago, with what I currently do now. I think it turned out sounding pretty nice!
I never did type up my thoughts on this cover back then, but Im fairly certain that E1M8 was an inspiration for the leads on this one. Doing all those bends, I think I wanted to capture a bit of Sign of Evil. The leads should sound a little familiar, since I did briefly use these notes over in the Watch Your Rock cover. Its funny actually, for the longest time, I never realized that this, and Blood Red Shadows are the same melody. I suspected that they sounded similar to one another, but never looked into it any further than that!
Anyways, the 3 other PSX tracks up next will be way more faithful in their instrumentation (lots of strings and brass!). I hope you all enjoy the cover ~DAR

Surprise, its Deaths Bells! Also today marks eight years since THT Threnody was released.
Shoutout and thanks goes out to @NuruTheDoomer for requesting KevinHEZs remix version of the track.
I just couldnt resist the urge to revisit this track. I figured this would serve as a decent example of what a redux of pre-2018 DAR-covers could sound like if done nowadays.
As always, I tried sticking as close as I could to the original. However, as per request from Nuru, I also threw in some of my original motifs that I had in my cover from the TNT marathon. Though, even if he had not asked, I think I wouldve totally still done it anyways!
I also decided to add in the conga drums, triangle, and tambourine into the 2nd half, since I felt it was fitting. I wanted to save the actual drum kit and ride cymbals for when the overdriven guitars come in.
I slightly tweaked a few of the drum parts, mainly having a few more double-kick bits and more toms at times.
Lastly, I extended the final chorus a little bit.
Overall, Im really happy with how this cover turned out. The original by Leo Sieben was already a classic, but KevinHEZs take on the composition turned it into a near 8-minute epic. Nice slow-burn leading into explosive energy when the choruses strike!

Just as I had promised to several folks earlier in the year, heres my take on Fire Lakes Dirge for the Planet from the STALKER series!
Many thanks to all the fans whom left kind words and support for my previous STALKER cover, Live to Forget! I also want to thank you all for your patience in waiting for this cover. It may take me a while to get to songs, but I always try my best to deliver on them when Im finally able to record.
Man, this is such a hauntingly somber track. A beautifully melancholic track that wonderfully fits the wasteland that is The Zone. I remember falling in love with this track as soon as I heard it on Sidorovichs radio in the basement/shop.
I tried my best to stay true to the original, while also trying to combine the acoustic and piano versions of the song. As much as I love the acoustic version from the soundtrack release, its a shame that the piano version that we heard in game never got a proper release. Also to my surprise, I dont think anyone has attempted to combine the two together. With that in mind, I knew exactly how I was going to tackle this cover.
At first, I was very doubtful that Id be able to do vocals for the cover, and was prepared to just have this be an instrumental-only cover. Curiosity and stubbornness got the better of me and I wound up transposing the song down by 3 semi-tones (tuned to C# Standard). Thus resulting in a warmer tone, further reinforcing the melancholy of the track.
Despite the mournful theme of the song, doing the vocals on this was hilarious fun. I had me going falsetto, Mickey Mouse voice, which actually worked really well in the mix. It really made for this very choir-like sound in the song. Then, an octave below the I want my MTV voice, the warm, softly sung, main vocals. The fun goofing around aside, this was also a rather interesting experiment and experience with vocals. Its always fun dipping my toes into styles sounds that I havent tried before. Or at the very least, styles that I dont often get to explore.
As for the instrumental, the one regret that I have was that I wasnt able to do the 2nd guitar part from the acoustic version. It had a left and right acoustic part, but in order to make space for the piano, I had to cut the harmony guitar part. That in combination with how I had the guitar set up in the mix didnt really allow for extra guitars without sounding weird.
Recording and working with my acoustic (or well, any acoustic element/instrument for that matter), is always really tricky. However, I feel like this time around, I managed to get my mic and chair all set up in the right position. Along with the right amount of compression, EQ, reverb, and other things, I think it turned out very nice!
I actually had some ideas for some noodling around with some lead guitar parts, but I decided to exercise some restraint. Along with what I previously said about having extra guitars, I felt like anything extra thrown in wouldve altered the overall mood and vibe of the song.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed my rendition of this beautiful track! This will eventually make its way on to streaming services, it just depends on how long it takes my distributor to set things up. Ill make another post for when it goes live on other platforms. ~DAR

Really like the feel of this one. Actually, now that I think about it, I feel like this is giving off some PSX Doom vibes.
I pretty much left this track as it was. Added some subtle reverbed gong hits for a little more impact alongside the crash cymbals. I also got to use a snare sample/soundfont that I havent used in quite a long long time. Quite happy with how it handled the whole military snare kind of rhythm.
That aside, I got stuck for a bit trying to troubleshoot an issue I was having with the strings (or atleast I thought it was the strings). I was getting these cracks/pops in the audio every once in a while, but it seemed to only happen when actually playing through the level. I wound up fiddling around with things for a while before realizing that my main render was fine. Probably an issue with converting the render into a low bitrate OGG for the music-pack/wad. In any case, thatll be something Ill get all sorted out later when Im prepping to release the music mod.
Also, apologies for how long this took to get out. Got a little sidetracked with a recording/mixing experiment that I was doing (messing with recording and pitch-shifting DI guitar tracks). Thankfully the experiment turned out great! Im hoping to have the next D64D2 cover finished and published much sooner than it took for this one to get done. Okay, all rise for the anthem of DOOM!
Dat brass though, man. Shoutout and thanks goes out to both Sraigius and Sylvain-Sly Casavant, for suggesting that I do a cover of this theme!
So this was pretty fun to put together, especially since Ive never had a good opportunity to play around with brass (aside from the occasional french horns here and there in other covers).
Since I already had the opportunity to rock out to this theme in my Doom 64 cover, I wanted to try and recreate the grand, epic, and orchestral feel of the PSX version.
I waited until about 1:50 before I went full into the 20th anniversary version of the song. I really wanted to build up to it, so I decided to start things out close to the original version.
Ive done some small subtle changes here and there, most of which I actually cant remember as I type this. Something new that I added was the inclusion of some big ol orchestral drums. Adds a bit of (literal) dramatic impact! One small change that I can think of is the panning of the guitars.
It was quite a lot of work mapping/transcribing all the notes out, as well as the layers upon layers of strings and brass that I had to put down. I basically took all my favorite samples and collections, and mixed them all together.
Im actually pretty happy with how the synth in the beginning turned out too. Originally, I was going to try and get it as close as I could. However, part of the way through, I quite liked what I had put together for the synth.

And here be the instrumental version for all of you to jam along to! This time though, with the actual video, instead of a still-shot or audio-visualizer thing!
So I kept the structure the same, but I decided to mess with a few things in the chorus. Mainly with making full chords for the rhythm guitar, as opposed to just normal power chords. I also wound up busting out the Strat and recording a bit that sits over on the left side. Its based on the original lead part, but I made those into chords and strummed them out. Then over on the right, weve got the normal leads (with a DAR twist of course!). Made the leads a bit dissonant at times, since I really love that sound, when used in moderation. Also had to throw in those slow whammy detunes at the ends of the choruses. Just felt really good to close the chorus with those detuning leads! I also threw in some harmonics right before the start of each chorus.
Really loved how this turned out! Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the instrumental too! ~DAR
