Perilous waters ahead, the only way out is through!
Ah yes, back when I was in my tapping-phase as a guitarist. A phase that I think all guitarists inevitably will go through, and as they should; because double-tapping will always sound cool \m/! With that context in mind, all the leads (except for the harmony part) were double-tapped.
I think the only other time I've gone tap-only for leads was on "The Shores of Destiny" from the "On Impulse" album. There may've been a couple of covers where I did it, but I think those were with a cleaner/less-distorted tone (like the Metroid Prime cover).
I really enjoyed tinkering with the leads on this one. I made small changes here and there, and even made up a harmony bit towards the middle of the song. Something that I was worried about when sitting down to re-record this was the intro tapping. You see, back when I did the original, I just sort of winged it and didn't play to a metronome. I just tapped, hoping that it would work with the 114bpm tempo. Thankfully I didn't wind up having any timing/tempo issues. I even managed to map out the MIDI notes for the MIDI version without too much hassle. However, double-tapped parts just don't sound as "magical" when done as MIDI. But I'm sure I'll tweak the MIDI later for when I release the MIDI version of the album.
As for the rhythm guitars, I kept them nice and simple, just as they were in the original. What I did do though was spice up the bass guitar a little. Nothing too fancy, just throwing in some octaves and fifths. It always amazes me how such a simple change/addition can do a lot for the bass. I quite enjoyed recording the bass bit during the harmonized lead part.
Also, just like the previous two remakes, the new strings and synth/piano parts are definitely here to stay! I even decided to throw in a choir for the final stretch.
I've got to also give a shoutout to QuietMusic for their free "Rain Maker" VST-plugin. I was almost going to goof around with pink-noise in a synth, trying to fake my own rain. I also have no idea where my original rain sample went, and for that matter, I'm not sure where I even got it from back then either. So it was probably for the best that I found a proper replacement. Compared to a decade ago, the amount of free, high-quality plugins/samples nowadays is stunning! Definitely burning/backing-up this one to disk and keeping it in my toolkit of goodies.

Really like the feel of this one. Actually, now that I think about it, I feel like this is giving off some PSX Doom vibes.
I pretty much left this track as it was. Added some subtle reverbed gong hits for a little more impact alongside the crash cymbals. I also got to use a snare sample/soundfont that I havent used in quite a long long time. Quite happy with how it handled the whole military snare kind of rhythm.
That aside, I got stuck for a bit trying to troubleshoot an issue I was having with the strings (or atleast I thought it was the strings). I was getting these cracks/pops in the audio every once in a while, but it seemed to only happen when actually playing through the level. I wound up fiddling around with things for a while before realizing that my main render was fine. Probably an issue with converting the render into a low bitrate OGG for the music-pack/wad. In any case, thatll be something Ill get all sorted out later when Im prepping to release the music mod.
Also, apologies for how long this took to get out. Got a little sidetracked with a recording/mixing experiment that I was doing (messing with recording and pitch-shifting DI guitar tracks). Thankfully the experiment turned out great! Im hoping to have the next D64D2 cover finished and published much sooner than it took for this one to get done. Okay, all rise for the anthem of DOOM!
Dat brass though, man. Shoutout and thanks goes out to both Sraigius and Sylvain-Sly Casavant, for suggesting that I do a cover of this theme!
So this was pretty fun to put together, especially since Ive never had a good opportunity to play around with brass (aside from the occasional french horns here and there in other covers).
Since I already had the opportunity to rock out to this theme in my Doom 64 cover, I wanted to try and recreate the grand, epic, and orchestral feel of the PSX version.
I waited until about 1:50 before I went full into the 20th anniversary version of the song. I really wanted to build up to it, so I decided to start things out close to the original version.
Ive done some small subtle changes here and there, most of which I actually cant remember as I type this. Something new that I added was the inclusion of some big ol orchestral drums. Adds a bit of (literal) dramatic impact! One small change that I can think of is the panning of the guitars.
It was quite a lot of work mapping/transcribing all the notes out, as well as the layers upon layers of strings and brass that I had to put down. I basically took all my favorite samples and collections, and mixed them all together.
Im actually pretty happy with how the synth in the beginning turned out too. Originally, I was going to try and get it as close as I could. However, part of the way through, I quite liked what I had put together for the synth.

And here be the instrumental version for all of you to jam along to! This time though, with the actual video, instead of a still-shot or audio-visualizer thing!
So I kept the structure the same, but I decided to mess with a few things in the chorus. Mainly with making full chords for the rhythm guitar, as opposed to just normal power chords. I also wound up busting out the Strat and recording a bit that sits over on the left side. Its based on the original lead part, but I made those into chords and strummed them out. Then over on the right, weve got the normal leads (with a DAR twist of course!). Made the leads a bit dissonant at times, since I really love that sound, when used in moderation. Also had to throw in those slow whammy detunes at the ends of the choruses. Just felt really good to close the chorus with those detuning leads! I also threw in some harmonics right before the start of each chorus.
Really loved how this turned out! Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the instrumental too! ~DAR

Huge shoutout goes out to Gabe for nominating Hopes and Dreams, and many thanks goes out to all of you whom voted for Undertale during COVER BATTLEGROUNDS III! I hope this will have been worth the long wait =).
So originally, this was ONLY going to be Hopes and Dreams by itself, with maybe a few small changes and additions... however as you can see, that is not how things turned out!
Just like with any project, I always want to make sure I have a good grasp of the source material. I know Im like four or five years late to the party, but recently I finally got to experience Undertale for the first time ever (such a wonderfully charming little game!).
I had already been really looking forward to working on this one... and that was before I truly understood the full context of the song(s). After completing the normal and True Pacifist endings, I felt very moved by them. Honestly, I guess you could say that it filled me with DETERMINATION!
During my planning phase, I knew that I absolutely needed to combine Hopes and Dreams with Last Goodbye and SAVE The World. I also really took a liking to His Theme, and I felt like itd make a nice end for the video.
Ive gotta say, I always really REALLY love working on such upbeat/uplifting tracks. I had such a great feeling while working on this cover. It felt very similar to how I felt while working on Those Who Fight from my FF7 Medley.
I tried my best to stick close to the sound and spirit of the originals here. I made sure to try and make the strings and synths sound close to the originals as well.
The way I look at this, the first 2/3 of the video is like the Hope part with how upbeat (and hopeful) it is. Then the last 1/3 with His Theme is like the Dream.
After being all upbeat, it just felt wrong to end it with the notes ringing out at around 6:02. I felt like it needed something calming to come down from the energy from earlier.
Originally this final bit was supposed to be a longer combination of His Theme and Undertale. However, as soon as I started playing along with the song, I wound up creating a new bass-line, and just sort of did my own thing in the end. Im also always happy whenever I get to use my Strat for nice clean parts. I think it really shines when it comes to the sort of style heard here. Maybe I might put together an album or EP comprised entirely of relaxing tracks like this.
... but thats a project for another time. Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the video!

Its always fun whenever I get a chance to throw a pipe organ into the mix!
So, as per usual, I tried to stick close to the original. Song structure is the same, I just tweaked and added a couple of small things here and there.
To really go further with that gothic kind of vibe with the organ, I threw in some choir parts to accompany it.
I wound up changing the rhythm guitar part around 0:50. I decided to riff around a little, and also made up some simple leads to play alongside it.
Also, I kept imagining some slow, sinister laughter, so I threw one in starting at 1:50. Which then leads into some good ol fun noodling on the leads.
I also decided to beef up the rhythm guitars after the sinister laugh bit. Going from single/root notes, to power-chords, for more oomph!
I dont know what it is about this final section, but it really makes me feel kind of nostalgic. Like, it makes me think of the covers Ive done from the previous Doom marathons. Just has a wonderfully Doomy-vibe to me.

This ones certainly been a VERY long time coming! Its time for this marathons credits roll.. but it aint over yet, weve still got 3 more to go!!
Really love how this one turned out, also had fun jamming out to this one too. I think one of my favorite things in this was the spacey and cool sounding piano that plays when everything is in full swing. Bass was also simple, but very fun to play (as seen by the energetic bouncing around).
Aside from extending things for a DAR-style outro, I tried to keep as faithful as I could to the original. One change I did do was adding some volume swelling automation on the strings/orchestra in the beginning. Just felt right, and dramatic! Also added a piano chord at the end too.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy my take on this beautiful track m/! Also hope its been worth the wait, since I know some folks out there have been waiting a long, long time for this one in particular to get covered! ~DAR
