I had a great time at Celtic Connections in Glasgow this past weekend, aside from being temporarily stranded in Dublin due to an Aer Lingus strike. There were a lot of highlights, not including the ones related to fried food, but it was especially nice to get to sing this one with Cath. Despair comes from the American Musical Magazine, printed in Northampton MA in the first years of the 19th century. It's an amazing collection of music, including several great songs like this one that I've never seen anywhere else. We recorded it with both Cordelia's Dad, on the album "What It Is" recorded by Steve Albini in 1997, and Northampton Harmony on "The Hookes' Regular Sing, 1995.
