In this view we can see the former Friar Gate railway line to the west of Uttoxeter Old Road where it runs along the south side of Slack Lane.
As you can see there were quite a few sidings off the Friar Gate line, there used to be 8 sets of tracks going under that bridge!
In both views you can see Uttoxeter Old Road going up through the view over the bridge near Slack Lane, if you never knew about the railway line then you may have wondered
what that bridge was for, now you can see why it was there.
There used to be short row of 12 cottages off Slack Lane (opposite side to Peach Street) called Shelton Terrace, you can see them in the 1948 view to the left of the engine shed opposite side to Peach Street. Today this is where 153 Slack Lane is located. Shelton Terrace was demolished in 1975.
To the left of Shelton Terrace was Granby Works (Leather & Parchment).
Other businesses between Parcel Terrace and the railway lines were Hazelwood’s, a Rivet works, Chemical works, Saw Mill, Paper Staining Works and even Phoenix Foundry & Engineering works, Sheltons Brickworks.
In 2026 this area is home to businesses such as Huws Gray Buildbase, Screwfix, Sunset Tyres, Physique Evolution Gym.
Rowditch rec opened in 1889 and can be seen in both views.
Uttoxeter Road Cemetery is in both views at the bottom, this opened in 1843.
In 1948 you can make out the track in the former Greyhound stadium top right.
In 1948 the railway tracks to the left headed off to Mickleover station, on the right they went to Friar Gate station and the GNR Goods yard which is being reproposed.
Sims Avenue (below the old Greyhound Stadium) was built in 1935.
Derby Cathedral school was built on top of the railway sidings and opened in July 2023.
In the 2026 view, on the corner of Slack Lane you can see a building which was Quarndon Electronics it operated from there from the 1960's to 2016 when it was sold, this building is currently being converted to flats.
Also on that corner flats were built in 2024 called "Etwall House"

I have made this fading then and now video using two vertical top-down photographs of a location, one taken by the RAF in the 1940's and one from Google Maps Satellite view, I have
lined them up precisely with each other so that you can watch as it fades back and forth to reveal what has changed in the decades that have passed between
the two views. Sometimes the changes are massive, sometimes they are subtle, its well worth taking your time looking at different areas of the view as you will keep spotting things.
☑ To get the most out of these presentations you really need to view them on a big screen or least a PC/Laptop with a proper screen as viewing them on a small phone screen
you simply won’t be able to see all the details properly. If you open the video in the YouTube App on your phone and you are on your homes Wi-Fi network and have a
smart TV turned on (TV's have had this YT casting feature since 2016). Simply tap the cast icon (next to the Gear icon on the screen) and select your TV from the list,
you may have to type in a code to pair it, you now know how to enjoy my videos in 4K ! If you don’t have a Smart TV or a PC then the best thing is to
at least install the YouTube app and view the videos in that in Fullscreen mode, its
worth noting that once you are playing a video you can zoom in on the video using two fingers as a way of seeing more details.
