☑ Please read the description below as I have detailed all the things of interest that you can see have changed as well as bit of history you may not know.
I have made this fading then and now video using two vertical top-down photographs of a location, one taken by the RAF in the 1940's and one from Google Maps Satellite view, I have
lined them up precisely with each other so that you can watch as it fades back and forth to reveal what has changed in the decades that have passed between
the two views. Sometimes the changes are massive, sometimes they are subtle, its well worth taking your time looking at different areas of the view as you will keep spotting things.
☑ It takes a lot of time to get the two views lined up with each other so precisely as the old 1940's RAF photographs are not taken on northerly flightpaths, so it means having to
rotate the 2026 view around until North matches up with North in the 1940's photographs. Then I have to match the scale, aspect ratio, Pixel spread, lens distortion and dimensions but I think the great effort I put into
making these "vertical photo then and now" videos is well worth it, let me know in the comments if you enjoyed the effort I put in and if you would like to see more.
☑ To get the most out of these presentations you really need to view them on a big screen or least a PC/Laptop with a proper screen as viewing them on a small phone screen
you simply won’t be able to see all the details properly. If you open the video in the YouTube App on your phone and you are on your homes Wi-Fi network and have a
smart TV turned on (TV's have had this YT casting feature since 2016). Simply tap the cast icon (next to the Gear icon on the screen) and select your TV from the list,
you may have to type in a code to pair it, you now know how to enjoy my videos in 4K ! If you don’t have a Smart TV or a PC then the best thing is to at least install the YouTube app and view the videos in that in Fullscreen mode, its
worth noting that once you are playing a video you can zoom in on the video using two fingers as a way of seeing more details.
► Points of interest in this video :
Quite substantial changes between these views, The railway line, Stores Road and parts of Nottingham Road are the only real constants.
The Derby Canal can clearly be seen still in water flowing directly across the centre of the 1948 view, from this altitude there are no clues in 2026 that it ever ran across this bit of land.
On the far left side of both views is The Midland Railway bridge, the construction of this line started in 1836 and it opened 11th May 1840.
Just to the left of this railway bridge is the car park for Cardinal Square, this well known five-storey building was built in 1965 as Eastgate House, it sits directly on top of the route of the former Derby canal.
In the 2026 view you can see Derby's Pentagon Island which was built in the late 1970's and it opened to traffic on 29th May 1980. The A52 (Eastgate) cuts straight through the middle of the view.
Note in the 1948 view that the Cricket ground seems to extend a lot further south and has a football pitch marked out on it. This large area of land was Derby Racecourse which opened in 1848.
South Derbyshire Cricket club moved onto the Racecourse in 1863 established a cricket ground there. It became the Derbyshire County Cricket Ground in 1870.
Those collection of buildings between the railway tracks and Stores Road which today is a council depot (Streetpride) started around 1910 with a tramcar shed which
was enlarged in the 1930's. The site was developed further in 1950's, by the 1960's the railway branches and the Northern section of the Derby canal to Little Eaton had disappeared.
Sir Frank Whittle Way was built in the late 1980's, named after Derby's Rolls-Royce pioneer of the Jet Engine.
Stores Road was built in 1884 but as "Sanitary Road" and changed to Stores Road in 1908 It ran along side the Little Eaton branch of the Derby Canal.
On the other side of Stores Road in 1931 Aiton & Co engineering works was built, their surviving office building still exists in 2026 and is Grade II listed.
The Little Eaton branch of the Derby canal flowed under a bridge on Nottingham Road and there is still evidence of that bridge there in 2026 in the curb edge.
I wonder why there were two football pitches and two tennis courts located bottom right of the 1948 view, who did they belong to?
