On May 17th 2022 a paper was released by Nature about a Middle Pleistocene molar that was discovered in the Annamite Mountain chain in the country of Laos.
This molar most likely belongs to a Human from the Denisovan species, and if this is indeed the case, it means that this will be the first discovery of a Denisovan in South-East Asia.
The Molar was discovered in the Tam Ngu Hao 2 cave, which is also known as the Cobra Cave, it's located in the Hua Pan province in the country of Laos, which is a country in South-East Asia, below China and above Thailand.
The sediment surrounding the molar was analysed and dated by the use of a multitude of mthods, including Bayesian modelling of luminescence dating of the sediment, uranium thorium dating of an overlying flowstone, uranium thorium dating and ESR dating of associating faunal teeth found in the same layer of sediment.
Again, ESR stands for Electron Spin Resonance, which is an important method of dating fossils, especially teeth.
The dating methods that were used showed that the Molar dates back to between 164,000 and 131,000 years ago, when this area was warm and had a tropical climate, similar like the climate in the area that we see today.
The Molar itself was analysed as well, the internal structure was in combination with palaeoproteomic analyses of the enamel indicate that the molar most likely belonged to a young female in the Homo genus.
When analysing the morphology of the molar itself like for instance the cusps, it most closely resembles the molars found on the Xiahe mandible that was found in the Baishiya Cave in Tibet.
The close morphological similarity between these 2 specimen indicate that the molar that was discovered in the Cobra Cave in Laos most likely belongs to a Denisovan as they resemble the same taxon.
