On January 17, 1997, a McDonnell Douglas Delta II launched from Pad 17A at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The payload was a Lockheed Martin GPS IIR-1 satellite. Thirteen seconds later, the rocket exploded. A solid rocket motor failure triggered an automatic self-destruct command.
