Claude Code 2.1.236 adds ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_MODEL: it sets the model new sessions start on. A /model choice can override it and persist across restarts.
That makes it a starting preference, not proof of a lock or policy. Check /model before work that depends on the active selection.
