In 1983, Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons founded Def Jam records and became a driving force in hip hop and rap music primarily, although it has ventured into other genres- you certainly know some of their artists, Beastie Boys, DJ Kahled, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Ludacris, Pusha-T, Justin Bieber, uh, P Diddy had some kinda relationship with the label- it’s a pretty big deal in hip hop. Def Jam had a brief but fascinating relationship with games through a series of fighting games in the early 2000s, which somehow led them to Konami. From 2003 to 2010, Konami had a fairly successful Karaoke franchise, Karaoke Revolution- there are a ridiculous number of games in the franchise counting the many Japanese exclusive ones, which somehow led to 4mm games, founded by a former Def Jam executive, and uh, 2 guys from Rockstar, to make their only game- more on that later because it’s insane, Def Jam Rapstar, a rap karaoke game, for the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii in 2010.
