Welcome back to our early morning seminary teacher training series! After laying a basic foundation with search questions, it is time to move to the next level of classroom inquiry. In this video, we explore how to use analyze questions to invite learners to seek a broader and deeper understanding of the scriptures.
Key Concepts Covered in This Training:
Timing is Key: While foundational questions are asked beforehand, analyze questions are usually asked after students have become familiar with the verses they are studying.
The Defining Trait: A key characteristic to remember is that an analyze question almost always has more than one possible answer. These questions are designed to help students examine relationships and patterns or discover contrasts within the scriptures.
Three Main Purposes: We discuss how these questions generally serve at least one of three core purposes: helping students better understand the context and content, helping them identify gospel principles and doctrines, or helping them develop a deeper understanding of those principles and doctrines.
Expanding Context and Content: Learn how to help students expand their understanding by examining passages in their historical and cultural background, or in the light of other passages of scripture. We explore how these questions can clarify the meaning of words or phrases and assist in analyzing the details of a storyline for greater meaning. Crucially, this analytical process prepares students to be able to identify principles and doctrines on their own.
Scriptural Examples: We provide practical examples of how to craft these questions, such as asking students what differences they see between Laman and Lemuel’s response to the angel's direction compared to Nephi’s response. We also look at how to analyze storyline details, such as asking what led to the loss of the 116 pages that prompted the Lord's counsel to Joseph Smith in Doctrine and Covenants 3:7.
