This 1950s US Navy Training Film (MN-105a) was produced by the Bureau of Aeronautics Photographic Science Laboratory and looks at health considerations for hard hat, deep sea divers. It uses animations to teach concepts such as how to calculate pressure, how the body and organs respond to pressure underwater, the effects of decompression sickness, as well as generally important health standards that deep-sea divers need to meet. The underwater footage was taken at Silver Springs, Florida. The type of diving suit shown is the standard diving dress, also known as hard-hat or copper hat equipment, deep sea diving suit or heavy gear. This is a type of diving suit that was formerly used for all relatively deep underwater work that required more than breath-hold duration, which included marine salvage, civil engineering, pearl shell diving and other commercial diving work, and similar naval diving applications. Today, standard diving dress has largely been superseded by lighter and more comfortable equipment

Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
