Deep Dive aims to take a deep look at the latest research from scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. In this episode, Scripps Director Margaret Leinen speaks with Assistant Professor Deirdre Lyons, part of the Center for Marine Biotechnology and Biomedicine and the Marine Biology Research Division at Scripps. Lyons is a cell and molecular biologist who studies evolutionary developmental biology and gene regulation of development. Her research compares developmental patterns in different animal embryos to understand how diversity arose through evolution. She uses high-tech tools including CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing to gain a more complete understanding of the cellular and gene regulatory mechanisms.
