Daniel Ericourt (1903-1998), piano
"Born in Jossigny, France, on Dec. 12, 1903, Ericourt was a child prodigy who had the great fortune to meet and perform with Debussy. At 13, he was on the same bill with Debussy and was invited to turn Debussy's pages as the performer played his own solo. Soon after that 1916 concert, Debussy wrote Ericourt a letter encouraging and challenging the young pianist. It was an association, along with Ericourt's friendship with Debussy's widow, that propelled Ericourt to become the premier interpreter of Debussy's work.After graduating from the Paris Conservatory, where he was a classmate of American composer Aaron Copland, Ericourt began a distinguished career as a concert pianist, playing in New York, Paris, Baltimore, London, Madrid and other cities. He came to the United States in 1928 to perform and eventually teach. Ericourt was on the music faculties at the Cincinnati and Peabody conservatories of music and at the University of Illinois."
