I have always liked using this riff as a way to teach alternate picking, specifically how it relates to rhythmic feel. Keep the picking hand moving to the beat, and pick direction kind of takes care of itself. It feels difficult if you're not used to it, but in the long run it'll help you stay locked into the beat so that you can play with perfect timing and minimal effort.
