Sara Dhooma | Day 6 - Camino del Mar | Stupendous Fuciño do Porco & O Vicedo Detour from Historic Camino Route @SaraDhooma | Uploaded August 2022 | Updated October 2024, 6 hours ago.
I am attempting to follow in the footsteps of pilgrims and complete the historic Camino del Mar route. Olivia from the OLI VITA HOSTEL helped me plan out my stages to Santiago to arrive in time for the big July 24th fiesta.
I have two extra days, so I decided to explore more of the coastal nature trails.
This morning I crossed through the ‘Porta de Carlos V’ and headed over the bridge towards Covas. I should have taken a larger sized coffee at the cafe because I got really confused by a large roundabout. An older local lady noticed I was puzzled looking at the GPS map. She told me to walk on the shoulder of the road. I protested that it was dangerous, but she assured me that no cars would cause harm. And she was correct! I later figured out the ‘correct’ way on the nature path was to climb over a mountain. Ooops!
I detoured upwards from the nature trail to visit Punta Socastro ( known as “O Fuciño do Porco”). Olivia wisely insisted I visit - and also informed me I need to reserve a time slot on their website in advance (free). The views of the Cantabrian Sea were spectacular from the cliffs. The wooden walkways were fun to climb and gave a unique perspective to the seascape.
I returned the same way to continue on the nature trail. After a climbing over a small mountain the San Roman Cross (in memorial for a shipwreck) appeared high above a white sandy beach.
I stopped at the cafeteria by the beach for a rehydrating Aquarius and then walked to small path around the beach. After another dangous highway shoulder walk to San Roman’s Lookout I decided to deviate from the Nature Path. I randomly walked towards O Vicedo and the highlight was stumbling upon Santo Estevo do Val Church (although the gate was locked!). Finally, I ate a grocery store salad and took the short train back to Viveiro. I will return to the same spot tomorrow.
