Most meditation instructions focus on what you’re paying attention to.
The breath.
The body.
The sounds around you.
Eventually, another question emerges.
Who is aware of all of that?
Thoughts arise.
Emotions arise.
Memories arise.
Plans arise.
They come and go throughout the day.
Throughout the years.
Throughout your life.
Yet awareness remains.
Yoga calls this svadhyaya, self-study.
Studying direct experience.
The Self as direct experience.
Many of the things we call “me” are actually experiences moving through awareness.
Meditation gives us an opportunity to observe this directly.
As lived experience.
Today’s practice:
When a thought appears, simply notice it.
Then ask:
“What is aware of this thought?”
Sit with the question.
Let awareness reveal itself.
Let the Self reveal itself.
