Gameplay recorded by Retronomicon (NVSGamer)

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Anniversary Edition on PC is the definitive modern package for Relic’s classic 2004 real-time strategy game. Released as a 20th anniversary collection, this edition brings together the original Dawn of War and its major expansions: Winter Assault, Dark Crusade, and Soulstorm. That makes it one of the best ways to experience the original era of Warhammer 40K RTS gaming in one complete bundle.

The core gameplay still holds up extremely well. Instead of focusing only on base-building and resource harvesting, Dawn of War pushes players toward constant map control. You capture strategic points, build squads, reinforce them in the field, upgrade weapons, and keep pressure on the enemy. This gives the game a faster and more aggressive feel than many traditional RTS titles.

One of the biggest strengths is how well it captures the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, Chaos, Imperial Guard, Necrons, Tau, Sisters of Battle, and Dark Eldar all bring their own style, units, and battlefield personality depending on the expansion. The factions feel distinct, and the over-the-top violence, voice acting, and unit animations give every battle a strong tabletop-inspired identity.

The campaigns are also a major highlight. The original campaign is a strong introduction to the Blood Ravens, while Winter Assault adds more faction variety. Dark Crusade is arguably the best part of the package, thanks to its open-ended planetary conquest structure that gives the game more replay value. Soulstorm expands the scale even further, though it is also the most uneven expansion.

Visually, Dawn of War shows its age, but it still has charm. The unit animations, sync kills, explosions, and battlefield chaos remain satisfying, even if the textures and environments look dated by modern standards. The art direction carries a lot of the experience, especially because the armies are so visually distinct.

The sound design is excellent. Unit voice lines are memorable, weapons sound heavy, and the music gives battles the grim, dramatic tone you want from 40K. Few RTS games make basic infantry clashes feel this intense.

The downside is that this is more of a collection than a true remaster. Players looking for major graphical upgrades, modern UI improvements, or a full technical overhaul may be better served by the later Dawn of War – Definitive Edition, which released in 2025. The Anniversary Edition is still largely the classic experience, with all the strengths and rough edges that come with it.

Some balance quirks, pathfinding issues, older online systems, and expansion-specific unevenness remain. Soulstorm, in particular, has great faction additions but a weaker campaign structure compared to Dark Crusade. Still, the amount of content included makes the package very strong.

Overall, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Anniversary Edition is an excellent collection of one of the greatest Warhammer games ever made. It may not fully modernize the original, but the gameplay, faction variety, atmosphere, and expansion content still make it a must-play for RTS fans and Warhammer 40K players.

Score: 9/10
