Series: Aero Fighters

Aero Fighters, known in Japan as Sonic Wings, is a vertical shoot-’em-up developed by Video System and released in arcades in 1992. It was the first game in the long-running Aero Fighters / Sonic Wings series, setting the foundation for the later Neo Geo sequels with fast action, international pilots, and straightforward arcade shooting.

The gameplay is classic vertical shmup action. You choose a fighter pilot, fly through enemy-filled stages, collect power-ups, dodge bullets, and use bombs when the screen gets too dangerous. It’s simple, fast, and easy to understand, which makes it very approachable compared to more complex shooters.

One of the game’s biggest strengths is its character variety. Instead of just picking a generic ship, you choose from different pilots and aircraft, each with their own weapon style and special attack. That gives the game more personality than many military shooters of the era and adds replay value.

The stage design takes you across different real-world-inspired locations, with enemy planes, tanks, ships, and large bosses filling the screen. The action moves quickly, and the game keeps pressure on the player without becoming as overwhelming as later bullet-hell shooters.

Visually, Aero Fighters has a clean early-90s arcade look. The sprites are sharp, explosions are satisfying, and the aircraft designs are easy to read during busy moments. It may not be the flashiest shooter of its time, but it has a polished and functional style that fits the gameplay well.

The soundtrack is energetic and supports the action nicely, though it is not as memorable as some of the later entries in the series. The sound effects have good impact, especially during boss fights and bomb attacks.

The biggest downside is that Aero Fighters is fairly straightforward. Compared to later shooters, the mechanics are simple, and the game does not have the same wild personality or branching variety that the sequels would become known for. Some stages can also feel repetitive after multiple runs.

Overall, Aero Fighters is a solid and enjoyable arcade shooter that started one of the more recognizable shmup series of the 90s. It may not be as refined or quirky as Sonic Wings 2 or Sonic Wings 3, but its tight controls, character variety, and fast-paced action still make it worth playing.

Score: 8/10
