Empire originated from the same writing sessions that gave us the 1994 Self-Titled album. It cropped up occasionally on the 1994 tour.

An unreleased version was recorded with DEVO during the sessions for Feelings. In 2004 the song was finally given an official release in a radically stripped-back version on Grown Backwards
