If you're going the DIY route, here are the two NAS operating systems that I can recommend. The first is TrueNAS: truenas.com
I've used TrueNAS (previously FreeNAS) for 5+ years. It's FREE, but has a steeper learning curve. Can run the OS off of a small SSD of ~ 32GB size and run on any PC hardware from the last ten years or newer. There is a paid enterprise version of TrueNAS, but this is recommended for businesses running crucial backups in-house.
Another DIY option is UnRAID: unraid.net
UnRAID is a paid OS but has a simpler learning curve and pretty easy to navigate user interface. Simpler expand-ability options than TrueNAS, but less under-the-hood features.
